Water shortage

Water is an important supply that every person needs in their life, it could be for drinking or for sanity needs. We need water in order to survive.  In our daily life we use a lot of water for many different things in cooking, cleaning and personal care. There is a large shortage in water supplies nowadays. The lack of clean water is one of the main sources of disease in poor countries, which leads to death. Water shortage is caused by many different ways, firstly by drought which is caused by the lack of rain. Secondly the over use of unnecessary water for example, leaving the water tap running unnecessarily, over watering the garden and having exceptionally long showers. If nothing is done about the water shortage problems there will be a major increase in deaths all over the world.

Ethiopia is a country of around 85 million people and this country has particular problems related to water shortages. Around 49 million lack safe water and 75 million have no sanitation services. In the last 20 years, Ethiopia has experienced recurring droughts followed by food shortages and famines. During times of drought, water-related diseases are rampant. Surface water sources such as springs and ponds dry up. Remaining water sources are heavily contaminated by environmental waste, such as human and animal excreta, which is washed in when it does rain. The stagnant water serves as a breeding place for mosquitoes.

In times of drought, there is often not enough water available for people to bathe regularly. As a result, community members, especially children, suffer from scabies and eye infections. During these times, in an effort to conserve water, hand-washing after defecation or before eating is rarely practiced. Diarrheal and water-related diseases are among the principle causes of death in young children. And as for other reasons behind this crisis says the Gurdian "Aid agencies say that weather in this region has become more erratic and years of war leave populations especially vulnerable". Though the country possesses a substantial amount of water resources, little has been developed for drinking water supply, hydropower, agriculture and other purposes… people have no access to improved supply usually obtain water from rivers, unprotected springs, hand-dug wells and rainwater harvesting.

Management of Ethiopian lake resources should not be left to a certain government organ alone. Both the people and the government establishments should be equally concerned. Active participation of the rural population is especially attractive in lake management. Indeed the participation of the inhabitants, who contribute to the damage of the catchments, is essential. Heavy rain in the rainy season can suddenly raise the water level of a lake, causing flooding over fields and houses at the lakeside. Since environmental awareness is a contributing factor that makes the public participate in lake management programs, it is important to raise the level of awareness of the public through appropriate public channels, including the media.

Of course, the "developing countries" are in a way fortunate in having fewer environmental problems than "developed countries," but we are not secure. We should learn valuable lessons from the problems of the industrialized countries and take the appropriate precautionary measures as soon as possible. My final remark: Now is the time to start proper management of our aquatic resources to protect them for future generations.

Individual Assignment : Section 3

Thsesedays, many companies are manufacturing only hybrid cars and developing them since they found it more profitable and more attractive to buyers. They are also improving its features and trying to use alternative power sources like hydrogen. These new cars will depend on chemical energy by burning hydrogen itself or reacting hydrogen with oxygen. The success of the use of hydrogen will make a revolution at all standard, since our political, industrial and commercial life depend on the high demand of petrol, which includes gasoline of course.  The development of hydrogen power cars was supported by both the private sector and the government. Most hydrogen cars are currently only available as a model for testing and improvements. They are not ready for public use yet.  (Borras.2010)

According to recent and new studies, there are about two million hybrid cars on the roads. The top five countries that use hybrid cars are Japan, the United States, Canada, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In Japan and the United States, hybrid cars make up over half a million. These numbers are not fixed or determined; everyday new markets and buyers prefer hybrid cars over gasoline only cars which mean the number will get bigger and bigger. (spencer.2011)

Individual Assignment : Section 2
Development

The hybrid car is more useful than the gasoline propelled car. This is because the hybrid car is smaller, more practical and saves energy. Over time, companies have come up with new features for such developments in cars, for example some companies build it with extra advantages  like the ability to go up steep hills, easier parking features, better acceleration, and the programmed ability to stop and go in heavier traffic more easily. Other companies have made other features like the shut off engine, which can automatically switch to another source without any command. They also worked on the materials these cars made of, which meant a lighter car with enormous speed, as the older models were too slow. (Alves.2009)

Countries that wanted to go more green tried to support hybrid cars, since they are environment friendly. In some countries a man who owns a hybrid car has many additional benefits, such as a discount on many services, like parking and amendments to his model. For people who are trying to go green, hybrid cars will support their cause, since they produce lower amounts of CO2 than gasoline only cars. It is obvious that the result of all this technology will be a decrease in the use of gasoline motors on the road over and a bigger dependency on electricity as a power source. Such cars will also use a gasoline feature that mixes with other forms of power that could reduce pollution on the planet (Cohen.2011). However, it has to be noted that the energy required  to make this car is much greater than a regular car, so it is not a clear cut case.

Individual Assignment Section 1

A hybrid car is a car that uses more than one power source to work. Hybrid cars have the ability to switch from one power source to another. They do not depend on gasoline motors but they switch to another power source like electricity. They have many power sources other than gasoline and electricity like hydrogen propane, and solar power. The first hybrid vehicle was invented by Ferdinand Verbiest, Jewish priest, in 1665. He made a vehicle that could both be pulled by horses or run on steam. This first model proved the ability to have more than one power source in a vehicle. (Karim and Layton.2000)

In the 19th   century, Robert Anderson, Scotland, made the first hybrid car. Many decades later, companies took the initiative to improve hybrid cars since they were getting popular over the gasoline only cars. The first prototype had many problems like the low battery and the difficulty to shift from one power source to another, the problems were majors and many companies could not find a solution for the low battery problem. After that, companies worked to prove their deficiencies. The result was the final model of a hybrid car that could switch to three-horse speed. (Alves.2009)

The Region’s carbon emission has doubled.

Carbon emissions has started growing in the Middle East and North African cities in recent years by two to 10 times of the average global citizen. These countries which are rich in oil and gas are more susceptible to harmful abuse and emissions ,than the poor countries by burning fuel to generate electricity, power cars and other. A monitoring process of the emissions is necessary to encourage responsibility in the use of energy and help resolve climate change in the Arabian Gulf. The United Arab Emirates is taking positive steps and initiaves in order to minimize the use of carbon emissions and methods of absorption and processing.  This is because they are among the world’s top per-capita carbon emitters.
The purpose of this research is not to ascribe blame but to raise the alarm about the dangers which these emissions cause.

solar power plant

Solar Energy Plant

Gemasolar is a solar plant which is a joint venture by Masdar of Abu Dhabi and the Spanish engineering Company Sener. The idea behind this plant is to produce heat energy from the sun by using mirrors.

The mirrors reflect the sun rays and heat salt which becomes liquid and transfer the heat to the receiver technology. So the salt is pumped to the tower from storage tank to power up a steam turbine to produce electricity.

Produce around 110 gigawatt per hour. It is scheduled to heat thousands of homes. So the challenge is to maximize the plant output and storage the energy from the sun for use when needed.

The mirrors are very big so they have a control room to keep them following the sun.

The plant is state of the art and very exciting for the future of the green energy.
